The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Thomas J. Manning (MCSN: 487352), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines, First Provisional Marine Brigade , in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. In the face of heavy enemy sniper and mortar fire, Private First Class Manning courageously advanced to a position in another platoon’s sector and, completely disregarding his own personal safety, succeeded in killing two hostile snipers who were inflicting casualties on his platoon. Two days later, while moving forward under intense, accurate enemy fire to a well-emplaced Japanese stronghold, he was mortally wounded. Private First Class Manning’s splendid initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and great personal valor were an inspiration to the front line troops and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
