The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert Mann, Jr. (MCSN: 881256), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 22 February 1945. When a hostile group launched a surprise attack during the hours of semi-darkness, Private First Class Mann engaged the patrol with his automatic rifle despite serious wounds received from grenade fragments, and succeeded in killing seven Japanese. When the enemy was scattered by his deadly fire, he relentlessly continued his attack and, although unaware of the strength of the opposing forces, fought until the patrol was destroyed. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
