The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carl L. Mankey (MCSN: 818821), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of a Patrol of Company B, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 22 June 1944. Advancing up a steep slope with the other members of his patrol, Private First Class Mankey came under heavy enemy fire from an emplacement containing four machine guns and, moving forward to an exposed firing position, destroyed one hostile gun crew with his automatic rifle. Continuing his advance on the enemy position, he neutralized it by throwing grenades and, later in the same action, led a new patrol back to this strong point and assisted in destroying it completely. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Mankey and the United States Naval Service.
