The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Roman Majerczak (MCSN: 952139), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman of Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 24 February 1945. When his company had become pinned down by hostile small arms and mortar fire, and tanks were summoned to aid in the advance, Private Majerczak courageously led a tank through friendly lines by use of arm and hand signals, constantly maneuvering in and among enemy positions in the face of withering small arms fire, he then directed the tank’s fire against hostile positions and, although wounded during this action, enabled the tank to eliminate two Japanese emplacements. By his leadership and coolness under fire, Private Majerczak contributed materially to the success of his company in continuing the attack. His courageous conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United Sates Naval Service.
