The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Charles M. Mackey (MCSN: 178401), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Depot Company A, Branch Number Three, Forth Base Depot, First Marine Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Vella Lavella, Solomon Islands, 1 October 1943. When aerial bombs hit and set afire an LST unloading on the beach, First Sergeant Mackey disregarded the danger from exploding gasoline and ammunition stowed on board to render first aid to the wounded until medical assistance arrived. He then led a detail into the burning hold and assisted in the evacuation of casualties. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
