Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 79499

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George D. Lundberg (MCSN: 337419), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 21 February 1945. Discovering at sundown that the right flank platoon of the unit on his left had suffered heavy casualties during the assault on Mount Suribachi and that a dangerous gap had occurred in the Battalion line, Sergeant Lundberg courageously moved out under heavy enemy fire to reconnoiter the gap despite active hostile infiltration and to determine the location of the remnants of the adjacent platoon. Returning alone through the Japanese-infested area, he led his depleted squad across the rugged terrain and, although receiving a barrage of grenades and machine-gun fire from both front and rear positions, re-established the line on both flanks. Maintaining his position throughout the night, he alleviated a serious threat to the Battalion and closed a serious gap in the line. By his leadership and determined fighting spirit, Sergeant Lundberg upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
