The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Keith W. Luce (MCSN: 853199), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tractor Operator of Company A, Fifth Engineer Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 12 March 1945. When the attack of an infantry Battalion was held up by the enemy fire from well-concealed positions, Corporal Luce constructed a road from rear areas to a point beyond the front lines with a heavy tractor, thus enabling the infantry to use tanks in support. Working under frequent enemy artillery barrages, he continued to extend the road as the infantry advanced although attacked several times by Japanese armed with the demolition charges. By his skill and courage under fire, Corporal Luce contributed materially to the continuation of the attack. His devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
