The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Eulice L. Lowery (MCSN: 418859), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Medical Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on enemy-held Guam, Mariana Islands, 26 July 1944. Finding his bivouac area under attack by a large number of enemy troops who had entered our lines early in the morning, Corporal Lowery stood his ground and although exposed to hostile fire and observation, shot and killed one enemy officer and five soldiers. Through his courageous action, he impeded the hostile attack sufficiently to be of material assistance in providing time for the establishment of a defense to cover the evacuation of patients from the nearby Division hospital and, when ordered, retired to a prepared position and continued the defense of the hospital. His outstanding courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
