The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Jesse H. Lowe, Jr. (MCSN: 301077), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader, while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during section against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Marianas Group, 4 July 1944. Assuming command when his platoon leader was killed, Platoon Sergeant Lowe boldly led his men in a flanking attack against a heavily fortified enemy position that was holding up the advance of his men in a flanking attack against a heavily fortified enemy position that was holding up the advance of his entire company. Skillfully maneuvering his squads into position, he directed a steady barrage upon the besieging troops and succeeded in overcoming hostile resistance and in annihilating approximately twenty-five Japanese. By his daring combat tactics, dauntless initiative and courage, Platoon Sergeant Love was instrumental in enabling his men to seize the objective without a single casualty, thereby contributing essentially to the success of his company’s operations, and his indomitable fighting spirit in the face of tremendous odds upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
