The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant George T. P. Lovelace (MCSN: 0-25514), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Pilot of an Artillery Spotting Plane in Marine Observation Squadron ONE (VMO-1), during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 6 August 1944. Flying twelve miles behind the Japanese lines in an unarmed and unarmored plane, First Lieutenant Lovelace located an enemy concentration and, dropping to an altitude of seventy-five feet, determined the presence of seventy-five trucks, three tanks and numerous hostile troops. Defying intense ground fire, he continued to fly over the area until artillery fire could be directed on the target and, by his accurate direction, enabled the artillery to destroy sixty trucks, two tanks and numerous installations and to annihilate over four hundred of the enemy. His airmanship, courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Lovelace and the United States Naval Service.
