The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Francis P. Lorden (MCSN: 896598), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving in a platoon of Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division. In action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 6 May 1945. Quickly estimating the tactical situation when his entire fire team was struck down as they moved toward a vital enemy position, Private First Class Lorden determined that evacuation of the wounded was imperative before covering fire in support of the planned assault could be effected and voluntarily crawled forward alone to rescue his helpless comrades. Crossing the open terrain three times, he carried his men to safety, thereby enabling his company to bring accurate covering fire to bear and subsequently to overrun this hostile strong point. By his cool courage, resolute fortitude and unfailing devotion to duty, Private First Class Lorden contributed to the saving of many lives and to the success of an important mission. His gallant conduct throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
