The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Manuel R. Lopez (MCSN: 358389), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands, 8 July 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Corporal Lopez rendered valiant service during operations on Saipan. When at dawn on 8 July 1944, the enemy attempted to infiltrate the lines and seriously wounded a Marine of his platoon in front of the position, Corporal Lopez unhesitatingly faced heavy machine-gun and rifle fire to rescue his comrade and was himself mortally wounded. His self-sacrificing spirit and daring initiative in the face of grave peril reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Lopez and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
