The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George V. Lintz (MCSN: 472311), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945. Discovering a wounded Marine lying in a trench which was enfiladed with enemy sniper and machine-gun fire, Private First Class Lintz administered first aid and moved the stricken man to a safer position. Perceiving that the man was in need of immediate medical attention, he went in the search of medical aid and, after guiding corpsmen through intense hostile fire to the casualty’s position, aided in evacuating him. His outstanding courage and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
