Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 44965

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Warren D. Lilly (MCSN: 849550), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of an Assault Squad of Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 1 March 1945. Assigned the mission of clearing antipersonnel mines from the front lines, Sergeant Lilly went forward of his lines into an area which was under heavy mortar and rifle fire. When one of his men was wounded while working in an adjacent area, he rushed to the men and carried him to safety. Resuming his mission under hazardous conditions, he efficiently cleared the area of mines and enabled our troops to continue their advance. While returning to his own lines, he was wounded by a rifle bullet. His skill, initiative and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
