The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant Berry K. Lewis (MCSN: 285353), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, Fourth Pioneer Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945. As a member of the shore party, Gunnery Sergeant Lewis landed on D-Day amidst natural obstacles and enemy artillery, mortar and machine-gun fire which precluded moving supplies inland and caused congestion on the beach, preventing proper disposal of accumulated supplies of artillery, ammunition and gasoline. When a shell landed on the beach dump during an enemy barrage, starting a fire and exploding the ammunition, he ignored the hazard of the explosions and the continuing enemy artillery fire and mounting a tractor-dozer, pushed sand on the flaming and exploding ammunition, thereby efficiently bringing the fire under control to save vital supplies and reduce the danger to personnel in the area. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
