The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Joseph G. Lesko (MCSN: 437388), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Twentieth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan Island in the Marianas, on 21 June 1944. Discovering that seriously wounded Marines were lying helpless in a Japanese ammunition and explosives dump, Sergeant Lesko fearlessly advanced into the danger area in a resolute effort to evacuate the men and working with courageous determination despite the imminent danger of additional explosions, succeeded in rescuing a fellow Marine. Painfully wounded while carrying out his hazardous mission, he was subsequently killed in the same operation. By his persevering initiative, unwavering fortitude and great personal valor, Sergeant Lesko contributed materially to the safety of others, and his loyal spirit of self sacrifice throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
