The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Gene Henry Lease (MCSN: 1057285), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman of Company D, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 26 September 1950. When his platoon commander was wounded by intense hostile fire as the unit proceeded through Seoul, Private First Class Lease unhesitatingly ran forward to the officer’s completely exposed position and, lifting him up, carried him toward the shelter of a nearby building. By his prompt and heroic action, he was responsible for saving the life of the wounded man although he himself fell, mortally wounded, after covering all but the last few steps to safety. His selfless determination in the face of grave personal risk reflects the highest credit upon Private First Class Lease and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
