The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James Woodrow Lawyer (MCSN: 412924), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Amphibian Tractor Battalion, SECOND Marine Division, during amphibious landings on the Japanese-held Gilbert Islands and on Saipan from 20 November 1943 to 15 June 1944. Operating his tractor expertly under formidable antiaircraft and mortar fire and in spite of adverse weather conditions, Private First Class Lawyer effected two assault landings during this period which contributed materially to the success of our operations in strategic areas. Skillfully maneuvering his vehicle through a high surf, over a treacherous reef and in the face of stubborn and relentless enemy resistance, Private First Class Lawyer repeatedly landed assault and reserve troops on Saipan on 15 June 1944, persisting in his vital mission until mortally wounded by a Japanese shell. His outstanding devotion to duty and cool courage under attack were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
