The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Corwin T. Larson (MCSN: 0-16863), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the landing on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Mariana Islands, on 21 July 1944. Boldly facing withering enemy rifle, machine-gun and mortar fire, First Lieutenant Larson unhesitatingly proceeded forward of his troops to reconnoiter the area and, although twice wounded, returned unaided to his position. Determined to remain in action, he had a corpsman dress his wounds, then continued to lead his men until he was killed by an enemy mortar shell. First Lieutenant Larson’s aggressive leadership, valiant fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were an inspiration to his men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
