The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harold C. Larkin (MCSN: 815655), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company E, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 2 May 1945. When an Army tank passing through the company’s sector was disabled by a direct hit from a concealed enemy anti-tank gun and was then subjected to intense hostile machine-gun and sniper fire, Private First Class Larkin observed that all but one of the tank crew members were successful in escaping and, crawling approximately thirty yards to the disabled tank, removed the wounded man and pulled him to safety. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
