The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Elmer T. Langan (MCSN: 375796), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Company T, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, from 21 July to 10 August 1944. During an advance to the objective on 21 July, Corporal Langan assisted in the destruction of approximately thirty of the enemy and, acting as a point for his squad near Finnegan on 3 August, helped to destroy a machine gun nest containing twenty-three Japanese. In the advance north of Salisbury Junction, on 8 August, he aided in annihilating twenty-two of the enemy and, throughout the campaign, contributed materially to the success of his platoon during the assault and occupation of hostile positions. His skill, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
