The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Homer C. S. Laneville (MCSN: 481708), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Rifle Platoon of Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Guam, Mariana Islands, from 21 July to 9 August 1944. When his platoon’s defense line was attacked from both the front and rear by hostile forces on the night of 27 July, Corporal Laneville staunchly held his line and boldly exposed himself to enemy fire to investigate points of activity during the night. At daylight, he personally killed eight of the enemy and, during the subsequent advance of his unit, sided in destroying many more. When his platoon was ambushed on 9 August, he delivered effective fire which killed two Japanese and, although suffering from a painful leg wound, sided greatly in annihilating the enemy force.
