The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Frank G. Lamb (MCSN: 349325), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with an anti-tank unit of the FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, 27 December 1943. While leading his antitank crew without its organic weapons or machine guns into the front lines, Sergeant Lamb was attacked by the enemy who broke through the defenses and threatened a position on his flank. With bold determination he rushed his section through intense hostile fire and over ground offering little cover until he reached a point twenty-five yards from two enemy machine guns. From this exposed position, lacking even the shelter of a foxhole or emplacement, he fearlessly directed the fire of his men until a serious chest wound forced his evacuation after an hour of desperate fighting. Sergeant Lamb’s extreme bravery and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
