The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Kenneth V. Kuld (MCSN: 357654), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Demolition Corporal serving with the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 16 September 1944. When a central point in our defenses was threatened during a vicious onslaught by enemy units, Private First Class Kuld unhesitatingly crawled forward under a withering barrage of hostile rifle, machine-gun and mortar fire to the weakened position and courageously launched a daring, single-handed attack, fiercely hurling grenades and firing his weapon into the on-rushing Japanese troops until they were driven back. Although seriously wounded by shrapnel, he steadfastly held his ground and continued to fight with determined aggressiveness until he was killed by hostile rifle fire. By his daring initiative and great personal valor in the face of grave peril, Private First Class Kuld was responsible in a large measure for the successful repulse of a major Japanese attack, and his selfless conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
