Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 44533

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles H. Kremer (MCSN: 834103), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Litter Bearer of the Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 14 March 1945. When the Commanding Officer of a rifle team was wounded by enemy machine-gun fire and fell in an exposed position closely covered by hostile fire, Corporal Kremer, unwilling to risk the lives of the other litter bearers on such a dangerous mission, courageously crawled forward alone to the wounded officer and dragged him back to a point where evacuation was possible. On another occasion, he went forward of the front lines in company with a corpsman and removed a wounded Marine from a rifle fire lane to safety. Serving at various times throughout the Iwo Campaign as a rifleman, gunner in an 81-mm. mortar platoon and with a litter team, Corporal Kremer contributed materially to the success of his unit in these operations and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
