The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edward K. Kozlowski (MCSN: 353631), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during an engagement with enemy Japanese forces in the Matanikau River Area, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on October 5, 1942. In spite of heavy enemy fire, Private Kozlowski, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, voluntarily went to the aid of a wounded comrade. Unable to carry the injured man without assistance, Private Kozlowski removed the man’s automatic weapon so that it would not fall into enemy hands, and then with another marine made a second attempt to effect the rescue, but found his comrade had succumbed. A little later, going to the aid of his wounded platoon leader, Private Kozlowski assisted in removing him to safety. His great courage and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
