The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant Herbert J. Korstange (MCSN: 296016), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Gunnery Sergeant of Company I, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on 3 January 1944. When several small groups of Japanese soldiers infiltrated through a gap in our lines, Gunnery Sergeant Korstange immediately organized a small assault force of Marines and, disregarding intense hostile fire from numerous concealed positions, boldly launched an attack against the infiltrating troops, repulsing them with severe casualties. His quick decisive actions and inspiring leadership were in large measure responsible for the continuation of our sustained attack, thereby reflecting great credit upon Gunnery Sergeant Korstange and the United States Naval Service.
