The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant James E. Koretz (MCSN: 0-30394), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Forward Observer, attached to Battery K, Fourth Battalion, Eleventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action on enemy Japanese-held Okinawa, Ryukyu Group, 8 and 9 May 1945. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, First Lieutenant Koretz repeatedly went forward through heavy artillery, mortar and machine-gun fire to advanced observation positions in order to direct artillery fire upon the enemy. Under the most difficult conditions, he inspired his observation party to maintain communications and refused to abandon his perilous position despite serious wounds, persevering until he fell, mortally wounded by hostile mortar fire. His courageous conduct and self-sacrificing devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
