The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Stanley C. Kokofski (MCSN: 906842), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 4 May 1945. When his company was pinned down in a perilous position at the foot of an enemy-held ridge, Corporal Kokofski single-handedly charged the enemy on top of the ridge and , despite concentrated rifle and machine-gun fire, continued on without hesitation until he reached the summit. From this exposed position, he succeeded in driving the Japanese from the crest of the hill with rifle fire and grenades and resolutely withstood their repeated attempts to regain the position until his company occupied the ridge. His outstanding fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
