The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Dwight A. Kohr (MCSN: 0-18438), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader attached to the Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, on 15 September 1944. Discovering a by-passed enemy pillbox controlling a vital sector of the beach during initial landing operations, First Lieutenant Kohr defied the concentrated defensive fire to lead his platoon in a rush assault on the enemy position and, armed with grenades and carbines, waged a furious attack and succeeded in wiping out the enemy stronghold despite serious wounds received in the fierce fighting. By his fearless initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and determined aggressiveness in a critical situation, First Lieutenant Kohr contributed essentially to our successful landing operations in this strategic area, and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
