    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Bert A. Knox (MCSN: 233594), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Reconnaissance Sergeant of Company B, Fourth Tank Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Marianas Group, 20 June 1944. Maintaining close liaison between our advancing forces during a tank-infantry attack, Sergeant Knox repeatedly exposed himself to mortar and small-arms fire to provide technical advice to the tank and infantry commanders and, by his professional skill, coolness under fire and resolute fortitude, rendered invaluable service throughout the well organized onslaught which covered approximately two thousand yards. His courageous and tireless devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Bert A. Knox (MCSN: 233594), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy Japanese forces while serving with Company B, Fourth Tank Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, during the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945. Exercising outstanding leadership, courage, and initiative, Platoon Sergeant Knox, as a Platoon Leader and Tank Commander, contributed materially to the success of his battalion in carrying out its assigned missions during this period of intensive operations. On one occasion he saved the lives of his tank crew by shooting a Japanese soldier who was approaching with a box mine. By his loyal and inspiring devotion to duty throughout this campaign, Platoon Sergeant Knox upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
