The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Eben M. Knight (MCSN: 281124), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, Sixth Tank Battalion, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 13 May 1945. Advancing in his recovery vehicle under heavy enemy fire to repair and put into action two of his company’s tanks, Platoon Sergeant Knight dismounted from his vehicle and worked for twenty-five minutes in full view of the Japanese to repair the track of a disabled tank. He then went to the assistance of an immobilized tank within twenty-five yards of the enemy lines, and again exposed himself to hostile fire to accomplish the repair of the second tank. By his skill, initiative and untiring devotion to duty throughout, Platoon Sergeant Knight contributed materially to the success of this operation and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
