The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Gregory J. Kinne (MCSN: 340370), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Scout of an Assault Platoon in Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 15 – 16 September 1944. Acting as advance scout for his platoon, Private First Class Kinne made a daring reconnaissance of enemy positions defending the north end of the beach. Then, after returning to his platoon leader with valuable information which determined the plan of attack, he participated in the ensuing assault, personally killing three enemy snipers during the encounter. On the morning of 16 September, during the defense of our newly won positions, he fearlessly maneuvered to a vantage point beyond friendly lines from which he could direct accurate rifle fire and, sighting two Japanese armed with demolition equipment proceeding toward one of our ammunition dumps, killed both of them before they could infiltrate the left flank of the lines. His daring initiative, outstanding courage and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave danger reflect great credit upon Private First Class Kinne and the United States Naval Service.
