The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Thomas F. Konkoloski, Jr. (MCSN: 262320), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Ambulance Driver serving with the Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 10 July 1944. Braving terrific Japanese sniper and machine-gun fire, Private First Class Konkoloski unhesitatingly volunteered to drive his ambulance over an open field in repeated attempts to rescue wounded men. Successful in saving several lives before he himself was mortally wounded, Private First Class Konkoloski, by his exceptional courage in the face of peril, his outstanding initiative, and selfless devotion to duty at the risk of his own life, upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
