The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Dean T. Kingsbury (MCSN: 896989), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tractor Operator of Company C, Fifth Engineer Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 24 March 1945. In the face of heavy hostile mortar and small-arms fire, Private First Class Kingsbury assisted in the construction of the first supply road from the beach to the front lines. When the tanks were unable to advance because of impassable roads containing road blocks, he courageously removed the obstacles and repaired the roads, thereby enabling the tanks to advance ahead of the infantry. Wounded twice, he continued to aid in constructing roads until 24 March, when his tractor struck a land mine which completely wrecked the vehicle and seriously wounded him. By his initiative, courage and devotion to duty, Private First Class Kingsbury upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
