The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Clark King (MCSN: 0-41927), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the First Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 11 March 1945. Observing a member of his platoon struck down by enemy rifle and hand-grenade fire, Second Lieutenant King risked his life to advance under fire to the wounded Marine’s exposed position. After rendering first aid, he removed the casualty to safety. By his courage, initiative and inspiring action in the face of hostile fire, Second Lieutenant King upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
