The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Paul W. Kindoll (MCSN: 913288), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Assistant Driver of a Tank of Company C, Fifth Tank Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 12 March 1945. With his tank unable to return to our lines due to a disabled vehicle which was blocking the entrance, Private First Class Kindoll voluntarily dismounted under enemy fire and escorted his temporarily blinded Platoon Leader to safety on foot. Then, again risking his life under hostile fire, he directed a third vehicle to the disabled tank and hooking the two together by cable, was largely responsible for retrieving a critically-needed tank which was later repaired and returned to action. His initiative, cool courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
