The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Jack H. Kimble (MCSN: 0-29285), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Machine Gun Platoon attached to Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 9 May 1945. Valiantly endeavoring to come to the aid of a desperately fighting platoon when its leader was struck down and seriously wounded in an attack upon a strategic hostile position, First Lieutenant Kimble worked his way across an open valley through heavy enemy machine-gun and small-arms fire until forced by the intensity of hostile fire to take cover with a group of wounded Marines and stretcher-bearers. Observing that one of the party lay helpless in a position exposed to the slashing Japanese barrages, he went forward in the face of grave personal danger and succeeded in carrying the wounded man to a position of safety before he himself sustained severe wounds. His cool courage and outstanding devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
