The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Norman J. Kijewski (MCSN: 427428), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 3 July 1944. With his company pinned down by heavy enemy machine-gun and rifle fire during an attack against a vital Japanese-held ridge, Private First Class Kijewski voluntarily risked his life to attempt the rescue of a fallen Marine lying in the fire-swept area ahead of our lines and, fearlessly pressing forward under the intense barrage, crossed the open fire-swept area and brought the wounded man to safety. By his daring initiative, personal valor and self-sacrificing efforts on behalf of another, Private First Class Kijewski saved the life of a man who otherwise might have perished and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
