The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to First Lieutenant John R. Kendall (MCSN: 0-13986), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, from 5 July to 28 August 1943. Throughout this period Lieutenant Kendall aggressively led many reconnaissance patrols at great personal risk, accurately located enemy positions at Bairoko Harbor, and successfully led a food carrying party through Japanese patrolled territory when a portion of the friendly forces had been on reduced rations for days.
