The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Donald J. Kendall, Jr. (MCSN: 0-8082), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 15 March 1945. Assuming command of a company as a Replacement Officer when it was engaged in fierce combat, Captain Kendall reorganized the company and, two days later, led it in the attack over open ground through heavy enemy mortar, machine-gun and rifle fire. Courageously braving the hostile fire in order to encourage his men, he inspired them to their best efforts and attained the objective for the day. His gallant leadership and aggressive fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
