The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant James J. Kelly (MCSN: 436291), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 10 May 1945. Courageously disregarding all personal danger, Sergeant Kelly advanced alone in the face of furious enemy machine-gun and mortar fire to reconnoiter a position for his machine guns, from which accurate overhead fire in support of the attacking infantry could be delivered. After reaching high ground and determining the necessary positions, he returned to his men, ordered them to remain under cover and advanced forward of the lines a second time in order to dig emplacements for his weapons. Repeatedly exposing himself to the savagely increased hostile opposition, he continued his valiant efforts until he fell, mortally wounded. By his outstanding initiative, cool decision and unselfish performance of duty despite grave hazards, Sergeant Kelly upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
