The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Evan R. Kelchner (MCSN: 485576), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader, serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 15 April 1945. Determined to eliminate a strategically placed enemy unit which was directing withering cross-fire upon his advancing company, Corporal Kelchner unhesitatingly led his men through the intense machine-gun barrage in an effort to force the retreat of the hostile force and, taking an exposed position, delivered an accurate and continuous volley of fire upon the enemy, thereby covering his company’s advance until he himself was struck and instantly killed by a burst of Japanese machine-gun fire. By his aggressive fighting spirit, cool courage and unwavering devotion to duty throughout, Corporal Kelchner rendered valiant service and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
