The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Walter Jung (MCSN: 0-49172), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Fighter Squadron TWO HUNDRED FOURTEEN (VMF-214), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 18 May 1951. Carrying out a close air support mission against a deeply entrenched hostile troop concentration in the northern Korea area, First Lieutenant Jung executed a daring target run through intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire and scored a direct napalm bomb hit on his objective, killing at least twenty of the enemy and forcing the remainder to withdraw. Mortally wounded during this bold low-level attack, First Lieutenant Jung, by his superb courage, aggressive determination and unfaltering devotion to duty, upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
