The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Raymond E. Joynt (MCSN: 339894), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines, First Provisional Marine Brigade, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. Courageous and alert in the face of bitter hostile opposition while approaching the shore, Sergeant Joynt maintained a steady barrage of fire from the forward machine gun in his landing craft until he reached the beach and debarked with his unit. Immediately finding his men under heavy enemy automatic fire, he fearlessly re-manned the weapon and, fighting with forceful and deadly determination, succeeded in silencing the Japanese machine gun. Sergeant Joynt’s daring initiative and resolute devotion to duty throughout this fierce engagement and until he was mortally wounded on 26 July, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
