The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Matthew L. Joslin (MCSN: 245384), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Amphibious Corps following an enemy Japanese air attack on Vella Lavella Island, Solomon Islands, on 1 October 1943. When a tank landing ship was hit by enemy bombs and set ablaze during unloading operations, Sergeant Joslin promptly assisted in the evacuation of casualties despite the danger of further explosives from stowed gasoline and ammunition. Although wounded by shrapnel in a second aerial attack, he rendered heroic service in salvaging urgently needed medical supplies from the burning hold. Sergeant Joslin’s disregarding for his own personal safety and courageous efforts were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
