The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Harry M. Jorgenson (MCSN: 368817), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 4 May 1945. When enemy grenades and demolition charges held up the attack of his platoon, Corporal Jorgenson advanced alone against the position and, exposing himself to heavy machine-gun fire, located and destroyed the hostile fortification with demolitions, thereby enabling his platoon to continue the assault on the enemy stronghold. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
