The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major John H. Jones (MCSN: 0-6920), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Plans and Training Officer of the Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Kwajalein Atoll Area, on 31 January 1944. Working with tireless effort and maximum speed, Major Jones employed the small number of available landing craft to shuttle the men of the assault forces to Ennugarret Island. With utter disregard for his own personal safety while executing this vital assignment, he exposed himself to active fire from Ennugarret and Namur Islands until the Command Post itself moved to Ennugarret Island. His courageous leadership and heroic devotion to duty throughout this perilous mission were an inspiration to the troops of the Landing Team and reflect the highest credit upon Major Jones and the United States Naval Service.
