The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Louis F. G. Jolly (MCSN: 409140), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 7 July 1944. With a security detachment of his unit immobilized by shattering hostile fire, Private First Class Jolly promptly seized his automatic weapon and, unhesitatingly proceeding alone through the intense barrage, delivered a steady stream of accurate, determined gunfire against the enemy, thereby enabling reinforcements to advance and assist the stricken detachment. Fatally struck down by a bursting hostile shell during the bitter action, Private First Class Jolly, by his daring initiative, valiant fighting spirit and cool and courageous action against tremendous odds, had contributed materially to the success of our operations against this vital Japanese stronghold and his self-sacrificing devotion to duty throughout reflects the highest credit upon the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
