The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Paul B. Johnson (MCSN: 409646), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a squad leader serving with the Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Roi Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, on February 1, 1944. Observing that one of his squad members was seriously wounded and lying in a position exposed to intense enemy fire, Sergeant Johnson left his post of comparative safety and, in the face of almost certain death, courageously made his way forward in an attempt to move the injured man out of the line of fire. As he neared the extremely hazardous position, he was fatally wounded by a Japanese bullet. Sergeant Johnson’s great personal valor and self-sacrificing efforts on behalf of another were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
